The 19th Century Novel Essay -- English Literature
The nineteenth Century NovelA Novel is defined as a long story around fictitious characters, pen in prose as opposed to poetry. Novels were first written inthe 18th Century so by the 19th Century, the original, practically inserialised form was an established form of entertainment which wasalso helped by the increased adult literacy rate over the whole of the1800s. The idea of the novel had changed from being purely for theamusement of women to being available to a wider audience, cover awider variety of issues. It was also over this century that it beganto be increasingly acceptable, if not usual to write novels with anunderlying moral tone, particularly towards fond standards among thelower classes. Another theme of many 19th Century novels was the creative activity and depiction of strong and great female characters, manythrough the innovative generation of female writers.Walter Scott, born in Scotland in 1771 was famous for his wishful thinkerliterature such as Waverley (1 814) and Ivanhoe (1819), both ofthese escapist in their shot further back in the past (1745 andNorman Times respectively). Scott had been a poet until he turned tonovel writing having been outsold by Lord Byrons poetry. Ivanhoe, ahistorical romance is credited as being meticulously researched andseemed to secure the novel genre acceptable for men. He attracted a wide trudge of people through setting it in Scotland and delving into thepast, capturing early Victorians imaginations with his eight hundredyear old characters, seeking refuge in the past and firing theirimaginations. Ivanhoe splendidly sold ten thousand copies within itsfirst two weeks and led to a gothic revival, most famously Sir CharlesBarrys Houses of Parliament i... ...long struggle. Both Judethe Obscure and Tess of the DUrbervilles were highly criticised athis time of writing, the brutality of his stories shocking theVictorian Public. How of all time, he remains frequent due to the strength ofhis stories and ch aracters.Beyond the six authors that I have touched(p) upon, the 19th Centuryliterature collection is vast, many surviving and others move intoobscurity. Although the early 20th Century writers felt revolutionaryin their casting off of the old Victorian novel style, I feel that the19th Century Novelists were equally revolutionary in what they did forthe novel. They created similar novel genres to what exists like a shot andentertained and often shocked an uptight century. They introduced theart of observance and involution to the novel form and have formed thebasis for the inspiration of novelists ever since.
